As we are now rolling into the year 2017, this NBA season feels akin to watching a predictable movie plot – pitting good vs evil as the rest of the cast subside into the background.
The Warriors will win the West, the Cleveland Cavaliers will win the East, then we will witness the same two teams playoff for the third straight year in succession.
Surely it is time for some changes to be made to spice things up a bit and make it more interesting for the fans.
These are some trade deals that could be done prior to the February 23 deadline, helping some of the serious contenders to shake up the status quo and have the folks in Golden State a bit more anxious about their prospects.
Currently second in the East, the Canadian franchise could use another top tier player to push them up to contend with the Cavs. They should be calling the Atlanta Hawks and trying to trade for Paul Millsap.
Millsap is a good defender, quality ball mover on offence and offers veteran presence in the playoffs. This move might be able to prevent LeBron James from going to the playoffs for the 7th straight year.
The Los Angeles Clippers were looking like they could actually hold together a season, until injuries occurred to CP3 and Blake Griffin. Now reeling in fourth in the Western Conference, they need to add a piece to elevate them back to the top of their division.
Carmelo Anthony is most likely to waive his no trade clause to join his friend Chris Paul and have the chance at winning a ring. This would allow him to play the style he does in the Olympics where he plays his best ball.
Yes they appear a guarantee to walk away with the East, but they are still a rung under the mighty Warriors. What this outfit requires is a playmaker to take some of the burden off LeBron.
It is well known the Timberwolves are looking for a new home for Ricky Rubio. This switch would be a good fit for Rubio, a team full of shooters that allows him to do what he does best – set up his teammates and defend.
The two teams that need to start clearing the decks and acquiring draft picks are the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks Mavericks. Both have teams built for now with records that say: “start looking to the future.”
Each has players they can trade away and look to take on bad contracts if the other team attaches a decent draft pick with it. The Knicks need to build around Porzingis and the Mavericks need to try get the no.1 pick.
As for the Warriors, (barring injuries akin to last season) the only changes they need to make are minor tweaks to the team they already have in their possession, keeping an eye on the waiver wire for a vet that may get discarded.
When it is all said and done – it’s Golden State’s season to lose and unless others take action, we are just going through the motions.
